What is Body Mass Index?

When it comes to physical fitness, one often hears that term Body Mass Index or BMI.  This is a number that indicates your overall physical condition. This number is based on your height versus your weight and basically expresses your ideal weight based on your height. This number does not however take into consideration your overall physical stature or muscle tone.
It is important to realize that the body mass index is not a measurement of your percentage of body fat. There is a simple equation that you can use to determine your body mass. This equation is your weight divided by the square of your height. There is also a chart available that will provide you with a visual way to determine your body mass index.
This chart uses a graph to indicate where your weight is in conjunction with your height. Along the bottom of the graph is weight listed typically in pounds and kilograms. Along the side of the chart is your height in both feet and inches, and meters.
The chart is then broken into arched sections that are highlighted by different colors. The various colors indicate different weight classifications, these classifications include underweight, Normal, Overweight, and obese. These categories are then broken into subcategories including mild moderate and severe.
This index was first created in the 19th century as a formula but was not made popular until the 1970′s. This is considered a relatively reliable way to determine physical condition. However it does have some short comings, it may improperly express your condition based on several factors. If you are elderly than your fat percentage may very well be greater than your body mass index. On the other hand if you are athletic then your body fat percentage may be somewhat lower than your body mass index.

This is particularly true in the case of bodybuilders and weightlifters. An example of this is that a weightlifter who is 6 foot tall may weight well over 260 pounds. The body mass index chart will describe this person as severely obese and be expressed as a 30 on the BMI scale, however this person may have a body fat percentage of less than half of that.
Overall the body mass index chart and equation is a relatively good guide of a person’s physical condition. You should not however let this replace a professional opinion of your physical condition that can only be determined by a physician during a physical. It is important to remember that if you do feel you are overweight and the body mass index indicates this as well, then you may want to consider a training program and a modified diet, it is a good idea however to check with your doctor before ever starting a new training regiment or a diet

Finding the Beauty Within While Dieting

There seems to be one universal truth when it comes to dieting. No one really enjoys the process though we all eagerly await and anticipate the results. The problem is that far too many men and women around the world focus so much on dieting and perfecting their external beauty that they forget the beautiful people they are inside along the way. Our culture is becoming obsessive about the perfect body and the perfect body image.
If there was one message that should make it out to everyone dieing it is this: dieting should be more about health than beauty. You should not need to conform to some preconceived notion of what is or should be beautiful. If we create a world where everyone looks alike it would be rather boring in the end.
You need to focus on being happy with who you are in order to achieve the greatest dieting success you will have ever dared dream. Many of use eat out of emotional need or a simple need for comfort when we are depressed, hurting, uncertain, or simply in unfamiliar territory. There is no solution that will work for everyone when it comes to making peace with who you are and this by no means indicates that you should no longer seek to be the healthiest you there is. It simply means that your focus should be more on coming to terms with who you are as a person than in creating a new person or imagine behind which you can hide.
Dieting for the most part is an opportunity for many men and women to become someone else. Whether that someone is the person you used to be or some person you think you want to be, you are quite unlikely find happiness at any weight until you accept you for the person you are inside. This is often a difficult process but one that is well worth the effort. Once you’ve accepted the person inside you can address the specific needs that often lead to the excess weight to begin with. Depression is a common factor in weight gain as well as an inability to lose weight. By finding contentment depression will no longer a controlling factor in you life. For many, this is the freedom they need from their weight problems while others will find there are still hurdles remaining.
The important thing is that you stop allowing the person you are to be defined by what the scales say about you. Once you’ve reached a point in your life where you are happy with your appearance and feel that your personal fitness level is in hand you should discuss things with your doctor and see what he or she has to say. We do not need a nation of size 5 women. We need a nation of women who are self-aware and self confident and not afraid to be who they are on the inside regardless of how they look on the outside.

Finding the beauty within is often the most important aspect of dieting that there can be. Take the time while dieting to get to know the person you are and introduce that person to the person you want to be. In time the two will work out a healthy compromise and you will find that image isn’t really everything no matter what the glossy magazines try to tell you.

Under Eye Circles:

Beauty Routines For Beautiful Skin

Smooth, pore-less and free from slackness and deep lines, a flawless skin has long been considered a mark of youth and beauty. But for some of us, achieving perfect beauty seems impossible. Fortunately, good skin is do-able. It simply takes work. With a bit of knowledge and a regular routine, your skin will look better and healthier – than you ever thought possible.
Simple beauty problems could be answered with dedicated home-regimen (beauty routines) to regain the luster.  This article discusses problems related to specific under eye circle conditions.
 Under-eye circles
This is a very common problem, which is caused by: heredity, lack of sleep, mental and physical fatigue, stress and improper diet.
– If your dark circles are hereditary, you can hope to lighten them and camouflage them by the treatment given below; but they will not vanish.
– Sleep is very essential to both health and beauty. Lack of sleep is immediately visible by the telltale dark circles around the eyes. Make sure you get your six-eight hours of beauty sleep. Some people need more and some people need less. Skin revives itself when you sleep. This means eight to 10 hours each night, not five hours one night and 11 hours the next.
– If you are suffering from insomnia or chronic fatigue – something very common during menopause, consult your doctor and along with medical help, follow the daily treatment given below.
– A nutritious diet also goes a long way in preventing dark circles. It is found that insufficient iron, which causes anemia, is also responsible for dark circles. So, to get rid of those dark circles or prevent them, include the following in your diet.
* Eat a green leafy vegetable daily.
* If you are a non-vegetarian, include liver and egg – especially yolk in your diet.
* Iron supplement in the form of tablets can also be taken.
* Figs, sultanas are also good sources of iron.
* Wheat contains more iron than rice; so include wheat at least once a day in your diet.
* Drink plenty of liquids, six-ten glasses of water per day. Moisture is the key to complexion.
– Stress, mental and physical, also increases dark circles. To relax, close your eyes. Squeeze the juice from grated cucumber; dip a cotton pad and place it on your eyes. Put on some soothing music, lie down and just’ shut your mind or think of all the good things that you have experienced. Dark circles also increase if you have been watching too much TV or working on the computer for long.

Tips for treatment at home for dark circles under eyes
At bedtime, cleanse the skin around the eyes using a herbal cleanser by applying it on the areas and wiping it off very gently with moist cotton. Apply an almond based under eye cream around your eyes. Remove with moist cotton after 10 minutes. Cream should not be left on the skin around the eyes when you sleep, or for long periods. For day time you can try the following:
Make a powder of almond and store in an airtight bottle. In the morning, make a paste with milk and apply around the eyes. Keep it on for 10-15minutes and wash with water. Take care not to pull or drag the skin around the eyes. Some parlors do a special under eye treatment and you could try that too.
Specially formulated masks containing seaweeds are also available for the purpose. It has a revitalizing effect when applied under the eyes. When it dries, wash off with water. This should be used once a day.
Fresh air and exercise
Oxygen is vital to your skin. It has been observed that if you are continuously breathing in stagnated stale air (for example, if you work for 12hours in an air-conditioned office) you are prone to dark circles. To offset this, take a half-an-hour daily brisk walk and do some deep breathing exercises. This will do you as much good as an expensive under eye treatment
